Join the Conservation Effort on Volcan Mountain

What’s the Threat: The last 1,800 acres of the Rutherford Ranch, located right in the middle of the Wilderness Preserve, has been subdivided. Unless we act now, a development of houses and ranchettes would replace the spectacular view-shed and wilderness on Volcan’s western slopes. As many as 100 homes could be built on the 60 parcels, which have an average lot size of 20 to 40 acres.

It would be a tragedy if the last 1,800 acres were lost to development, and a waste of the vast amount of effort, money and hope that have already been invested in the existing Preserve. Impending development would diminish the wilderness quality of the Preserve, threaten important watershed, and divide the wildlife corridor.

What’s Our Plan? The County of San Diego has taken a bold leadership role to complete the preservation effort of Rutherford Ranch on Volcan Mountain, in a collaborative conservation effort with The San Dieguito River Valley Park, Volcan Mountain Preserve Foundation, The Trust for Public Land, and other conservation partners.

The coalition is mounting an all-out effort to acquire the rest of the Ranch this year, and prevent any development of this San Diego treasure. After 14 years, it is time to finish the job and save all the Mountain.

What Can You Do? The VMPF has launched a campaign to raise $ 2 million as the private contribution to this multi-million dollar acquisition. Private donations are an absolute must to match a portion of the public funds, to demonstrate the strength of community support for Volcan’s preservation, and to increase the priority of Volcan for receiving public dollars.

Through the generosity and vision of an anonymous family, the VMPF is half way there. This first million dollar gift was a major factor in the approval of another $3 million in public funds allocated so far for Rutherford Ranch West.

Join us in creating a legacy for future generations of San Diego’s wildlife and people. You can help us now in completing by donating to the conservation campaign. For every $1 you donate, it will be matched with at least $3 in public funds.
