Julian's Lions-Presented by the Julian Mountain Lion Project, Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Tuesday, May 10th from 5:30-7:30pm, come to the Julian Library to learn more about mountain lions, and living alongside them in a rural area like Julian, from speakers with the Mountain Lion Foundation (MLF), a nationwide organization based in California, and also from Dr. Winston Vickers of the Southern California Puma Project. The program will also launch MLF’s new Julian Mountain Lion Project recently formed by Julian resident Jane Santorumn. Jane and the project will provide hands-on, personal guidance on responding to mountain lion encounters and best practices for securing animals and pets.

Jane is also a member of the Volcan Mountain Foundation’s volunteer Wildlife Imaging Team (WITs). The WITs, led by Bill & Susan Carter, formed in 2015 to build on the previous monitoring efforts of a handful of VMF staff and volunteers, and to grow the knowledge base of the broad diversity of wildlife—including deer, bobcat, raccoon, fox, and of course, mountain lion—that call Volcan Mountain home. The health of these wildlife populations can be a good proxy measure for the health of habitat and water resources of the Volcan Mountain Range and the wide-reaching wildlife and watershed corridors to which the Range contributes. The information gathered by the WITs can provide important guidance for conservation management and restoration activities for the Volcan Mountain Range.

VMF Education Coordinator, Janice Smith will be leading an upcoming informational hike to share more about the Wildlife Imaging Team’s monitoring activities. Join the outing if you’re curious about wildlife on Volcan Mountain and how we learn more about them. The date for the hike hasn’t been set yet, so CLICK HERE if you’d like to be informed when the hike is scheduled.

You don’t have to be interested in volunteering with the WITs, but if you ARE interested this would be a great place to start! Click here to volunteer with VMF’s Wildlife Imaging Team!
