Grand Opening: Santa Ysabel Nature Center on Saturday, December 14, 2019

Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 11am -- It's finally here! The long-awaited Grand Opening of the Santa Ysabel Nature Center presented by the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, and co-hosted by the Volcan Mountain Foundation.

As part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Supervisor Dianne Jacob, enjoy light refreshments, live music and entertainment, site tours, animal encounters, junior ranger activities and nature crafts.

Flora & Fauna of Volcan Mountain -- Presentation at Alpine Library

On Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 2pm, Naturalist and Volcan Mountain Foundation Board Member, Valerie Cournoyer will be offering a presentation at the Alpine Library on the amazing variety of plants and animals that inhabit Volcan Mountain in Julian, CA.

The presentation is in conjunction with VMF's Marjorie and Joseph Rubenson Endowment for Art and Science at Volcan Mountain. The watercolors of 2019 Rubenson Endowment award recipient Kaili Park, depicting flora and fauna of Volcan Mountain, are currently on exhibit at the Alpine Library.

Bird Survey on Volcan Mountain, Thursday, October 24, 2019

Thursday, October 24 join Volcan Mountain Foundation for a citizen science bird survey on Volcan Mountain near Julian. This is a great opportunity to hone your bird ID skills with experts, learn about our local mountain bird species, and contribute valuable data to the Volcan Mountain Foundation. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near our Watershed and Sky Island trails. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey. Hiking is easy to moderate. 

Volunteer Stewardship Day Saturday, October 19, 2019

Saturday, October 19 -  Join Valérie Cournoyer and Susan Meyer for a stewardship day on Volcan Mountain. They are looking for a few volunteers who aren't afraid to roll-up their sleeves and get dirty. We'll be removing invasive plants at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center. Afterward, there will be an optional 1.5 mile hike on VMF's Sky Island Trail.

Shooting Stars and Hot Cocoa at Santa Ysabel West Preserve, Friday, December 13, 2019

Friday, December 13, bring your family and friends for a magical mountain shooting-star party at the Santa Ysabel West Preserve! Bring your camp chairs and blankets to the clear skies of San Diego's backcountry on the peak night for viewing the Geminids meteor shower. County park rangers will set-up a free hot cocoa station and open the large staging area for this special late-night preserve experience.

Volunteer Orientation - Saturday, September 21, 2019

Saturday, September 21:  Join Susan Meyer, VMF Engagement Coordinator, for a day on Volcan Mountain! You'll learn about VMF's different programs and fun ways you can help! Volunteer opportunities include outdoor education, habitat restoration, trail maintenance, bird surveys, wildlife camera monitoring, outreach tabling, special events and more. The Volunteer Orientation will include a tour of VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center, lunch, and optional hike. 

Nature Education Series: It's All About Bugs - Saturday, September 7, 2019

Saturday, September 7 - Join Dr. Michael Wall for a presentation on the amazing world of insects. Afterward, we'll go on a guided walk to find insects and see them up close! You will learn about the unique life cycles, habitats, and adaptations of insects. You will also understand the reason insects are essential to the world.
