The Preserve is open to the public for hiking 7 days-a-week, dawn to dusk. Docent-guided hikes are conducted once a month,
free of charge.
Next Scheduled Hikes:
Summer hikes to the Volcan Summit are 5-mile roundtrip hikes that offer spectacular views from the desert to the coast. Guided hikes are led by the County Ranger and volunteers, leaving from the Hubbell Gateway at the entrance to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve on Farmer Rd. Bring water, a snack, and wear good footwear and sun protection. On a clear day you can see to Point Loma and San Clemente Island. The hike to the summit is 5 miles roundtrip and is only open on docent-led hikes. There are many pleasant vistas where hikers can pause and rest, as the trail is fairly steep. Hikers should bring water, wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. No dogs, horses or mountain bikes are allowed on the Preserve. Visitors are expected to observe no smoking rules and private property fencing. There are no restrooms. Please, pack out all your trash to ensure that our wilderness remains undisturbed.
