Nature Education Series: Raptors, Saturday, February 19, 2022

Join conservation biologist and ornithologist Dr. Jeff Lincer as you learn about the life of raptors of Volcan Mountain. We'll start with a presentation at VMF's Webb Education Center followed by a lunch break at VMF's Sky Island trail head. After lunch, we will walk along the moderate 1.5-mile trail where we might get the chance to see raptors riding the thermals.

Join VMF's Education Coordinator, Janice Smith, for a fun workshop making soap from Volcan Mountain conifers. These botanical soap bars use fallen needles, nuts, and cones as well as natural conifer fragrance to bring a wintery scent to your bath or shower. You will make a glycerin and non-glycerin soap. Adding the fragrance is optional.

Audubon Christmas Bird Count - Monday, December 20, 2021

Monday, December 20: Join the Volcan Mountain Foundation in the Audubon's 122nd Christmas Bird Count! This is a citizen science bird survey at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center in Julian. All results will be given to the National Audubon Society that day. This is a great opportunity to hone your bird ID skills with experts, learn about our local mountain bird species, and contribute valuable data. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near our Watershed and Sky Island trails. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey.

Bird Count - Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Tuesday, November 30: Join the Volcan Mountain Foundation for a citizen science bird survey on Volcan Mountain in Julian. This is a great opportunity to hone your bird ID skills with experts, learn about our local mountain bird species, and contribute valuable data to VMF. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near our Watershed and Sky Island trails. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey. Hiking is easy to moderate.

Volunteer Orientation for Outdoor Education - Tuesday, November 9, 2021

Tuesday, November 9 -  If you're interested in becoming an education volunteer, please join Janice Smith, VMF's Outdoor Educator, for an orientation at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center. You'll learn about the different programs we offer school groups as well as the fun activities we do with youth. You'll also go on an easy walk along our .5-mile Watershed Trail and 1.5-mile moderate hike on the Sky Island Trail. Volunteer training will be done one-on-one with Janice on a different day.

Nature Education Series: Geology - Sunday, October 31, 2021

Sunday, October 31 - Join geology expert Mike Thacker as you learn about the geologic forces that shaped San Diego County as well as the specific geologic features of the Volcan Mountains. We will begin the day with a presentation at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center followed by a moderate two-mile hike along Cedar Loop Trail, which begins and ends at Ferguson Flat - a County-owned portion of Volcan's ridgeline not typically open to the public.
