Family Discovery Day: Saturday, May 18, 2019

On Saturday, May 18 the Volcan Mountain Foundation will be having its first Family Discovery Day! 

Come by VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center with your friends and family to learn about the unique ecosystems and wildlife on Volcan Mountain. There will be fun, educational nature activities throughout the day, including creating a rainstorm effect on a 3D watershed relief map, making a shelter from willow branches, and going on a scavenger hunt. You can also go on a gentle guided plant walk on VMF's Watershed Trail. See below for a list of scheduled activities.

All ages welcome. This event is free. No registration required.

Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Location: VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center: 22850 Volcan Road, Julian, CA 92036

Bring: Water, snacks or lunch, sunscreen.

Wear: Comfortable and sturdy shoes.

Scheduled Activities:

1.  10:00 am - 11:00 am:  3D Watershed Map - Participate in a fun activity that shows how rain water flows                                                over Volcan Mountain and makes its way to the Pacific Ocean.                                                                            (This activity repeats at 2:00 pm)

2.  11:00 am - 12:00 pm:  Plant and Tree Walk - See the beautiful trees and plants that live along VMF's                                                  Watershed Trail and learn how they grow. (This activity repeats at 2:00 pm)

3.  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm:   Shelter Building - Make a debris hut using fallen branches, twigs, and leaves.

4.  1:00 pm - 2:00 pm:     Animal Skulls and Sign - Learn about the wildlife who live on Volcan Mountain by                                             observing the unique features of each animal.  

5.  2:00 pm - 3:00 pm:     Plant and Tree Walk - See the beautiful trees and plants that live along VMF's                                                   Watershed Trail and learn how they grow, or

                                         3D Watershed Map - Participate in a fun activity that shows how rain water flows                                               over Volcan Mountain and makes its way to the Pacific Ocean.

6.  3:00 pm - 4:00 pm:     Fire Demonstration - Watch how fire is made using a bow and spindle, notched                                                fire-board, and a pine knot.
