Sunday, February 23 -  FULL -- WE'VE RECEIVED THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF REGISTRATIONS FOR THIS EVENT. Senior Meteorologist for SDG&E and former VMF Board Member, Steve Vanderburg, will give a presentation on San Diego County's weather. You'll learn about the many different weather systems that affect our region ― from El Niño to the Santa Ana winds. You'll also learn how weather patterns combined with topography cause different regional climates. The presentation will take place at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center. 

Afterward, we will hike along the Five Oaks Trail to the summit of the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve where there is a weather station. This moderately strenuous hike is six-miles roundtrip. Note: This hike will not cancel due to inclement weather, so be prepared for the elements.

Wear: Don your best cold, windy, wet-weather gear and good hiking shoes.

Location: Due to the gated entry for VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center (22850 Volcan Road/4002 Farmer Road, Julian, CA 92036)please plan to arrive by 9:45 am.

Steve received a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 2004. Upon completion, he became a full-time meteorologist at the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego and, later, with the NWS in Reno. During his time with the NWS, he provided forecast and other weather information to the public and state and federal agencies. He also managed the Red Flag Warning Program in San Diego. In July 2011, Steve was hired by SDG&E, his current position, where he provides operational weather support to the company, manages one of the densest, most sophisticated weather station networks in the country, and collaborates with local universities and government agencies on a variety of weather-related projects. Steve also provides direct support to SDG&E’s Emergency Service’s group and Emergency Operations Center.
