Wildcrafting: Manzanita Crackers and Herbal Cheese - Sunday, September 22, 2019

Date:
Sunday, September 22, 2019 - 10:00am

This one's now FULL--Instead you can check out the November 17th Wildcrafting Workshop - Manzanita, meaning “little apple” in Spanish, is a beautiful native bush that is easily identified by its beautiful green leaves, deep red bark, and green or red berries that look like little apples. In this workshop we will learn how to identify manzanita and their berries. We will be using dried red manzanita berries to make delicious crackers and herbal soft cheese. Each participant can pick their own fresh wild herbs to add to their cheese and create their own flavorful recipe.  We will enjoy all our treats with some manzanita bark tea!

We will take a short walk to identify (and taste when possible) the various types of berries and wild edible plants growing in the area. Volcan Mountain has an abundance of manzanita berries, blackberries, elderberries, wood strawberries, chokecherries, gooseberries and coffee berries.  There are also a few old apple trees on the property that give us a variety of apples to enjoy too.

Wildcrafting is the age-old practice of collecting or harvesting plants from their natural habitat, or “wild” habitat, for food, medicine or craft.  It applies to uncultivated plants wherever they might be found and is not necessarily limited to wilderness areas.  Ethical considerations and sustainable behaviors are practiced, such as protecting endangered species and avoiding potential depletion of commonly held resources. The practice of sustainable wildcrafting requires making a commitment to develop your knowledge and connection to the natural landscape, deepen your local sense of place, and take responsibility for its regeneration for future generations.
