January 23, 2022 Wildcrafting: Winter Conifer Soap

Waitlist only.  This class is full.  If you would like to be added to the wait list, please complete the form below.

Join VMF's Education Coordinator, Janice Smith, for a fun workshop making soap from Volcan Mountain conifers. These botanical soap bars use fallen needles, nuts, and cones as well as natural conifer fragrance to bring a wintery scent to your bath or shower. You will make a glycerin and non-glycerin soap. Adding the fragrance is optional.

We will start with a short walk to learn about the many conifer trees found on Volcan Mountain, including native pines, cedars, cypress, and Bigcone Douglas Fir.  After collecting your favorite conifer items, we will head back to the education center and learn how to blend them into soap bars using pretty soap molds.

Wildcrafting is the age-old practice of collecting or harvesting plants from their natural habitat, or “wild” habitat, for food, medicine, or craft.  It applies to uncultivated plants wherever they might be found and is not necessarily limited to wilderness areas. Ethical considerations and sustainable behaviors are practiced, such as protecting endangered species and avoiding potential depletion of commonly held resources. The practice of sustainable wildcrafting requires making a commitment to develop your knowledge and connection to the natural landscape, deepen your local sense of place, and take responsibility for its regeneration for future generations. For more information, please watch VMF's 10 Best Practices for Foraging Wild, Edible Plants.
