Nature Education Series: Geology - Sunday, October 31, 2021

Sunday, October 31 - Join geology expert Mike Thacker as you learn about the geologic forces that shaped San Diego County as well as the specific geologic features of the Volcan Mountains. We will begin the day with a presentation at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center followed by a moderate two-mile hike along Cedar Loop Trail, which begins and ends at Ferguson Flat - a County-owned portion of Volcan's ridgeline not typically open to the public.

High Tech High Teachers Day - Saturday, September 18

Join VMF's naturalist outdoor educator, Janice Smith, for a fun day at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center in Julian. This is a great way to introduce you to VMF's education program. As a High Tech High teacher, you'll not only get the chance to tour the nature center but also participate in nature activities that are typically tought to youth. This is a day to enjoy the beauty of Volcan Mountain with your family, so bring your kids along.

Volunteer Stewardship Day - Saturday, July 31

Join VMF on July 31 for a stewardship day on Volcan Mountain. We'll be removing the invasive black mustard and bull thistle along a mile of road located at the top of the County's Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve - an area not typically open to the public. This is a great opportunity to see the beautiful views from Volcan's ridgeline and help maintain its healthy ecosystem.

Bird Survey on Volcan Mountain, Thursday, June 17, 2021

Thursday, June 17: Join the Volcan Mountain Foundation for a citizen science bird survey on Volcan Mountain in Julian. This is a great opportunity to hone your bird ID skills with experts, learn about our local mountain bird species, and contribute valuable data to VMF. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near our Watershed and Sky Island trails. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey. Hiking is easy to moderate. 

Thanks the Palomar Audubon Society for their continued efforts for bird monitoring on and around Volcan Mountain.

Volunteer Stewardship Day Sunday, July 11 2021

Sunday, July 11, 2021 -  Join VMF's Executive Director, Eric Jones, for a stewardship day on Volcan Mountain. We'll be clearing the 1.7-mile Cedar Loop Trail that begins at Volcan's ridgeline. We'll be trimming trail side branches and removing downed trees using power equipment, including chainsaws.

This is a great opportunity to experience a trail that is part of the county's Volcan Mountain Preserve but not open to the public. If you are experienced using power tools and have the proper safety equipment, we'd love your help!

Christmas Bird Count on Volcan Mountain, Monday, December 21, 2020

Monday, December 21 join VMF staff for Audubon's 121st Christmas Bird Count. Results will be part of the Lake Henshaw Circle. This is a great opportunity to contribute valuable data to the Volcan Mountain Foundation and National Audubon Society. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near VMF's Watershed and Sky Island trails and hope to hear owls in the earlier part of the morning. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey. Hiking is easy to moderate.
